The sport of sailing relies heavily on the health of the world’s oceans and waterways. Its participants are now evolving to become some of the Earth’s fiercest protectors.

11th Hour Racing: sustainable sailing sports

11th Hour Racing, a program from the Schmidt Family Foundation, is prioritizing sustainable sailing from strategy to everyday practices to embed deep and lasting positive change on the marine environment.

“We are not selling a product. This is purely about sustainability,” said Jill Savery, 11th Hour Racing’s Sustainability Advisor. Jill Savery has seen a paradigm shift in sailing that has been spurred on by top thought leaders and competitors, including famed Olympian Sir Ben Ainslie and his Land Rover BAR sailing team.

“Global sports events around the world are trying new ways to encourage fans to adopt more sustainable behaviors, such as not using single use plastic water bottles,” Savery said. “By 2050 oceans are expected to contain more plastics than fish by weight and sports events offer an ideal opportunity to engage with people and inspire them to take action.”

“11th Hour Racing has successfully created an innovative model of sponsorship with the Land Rover BAR sailing team, where success is measured not by an increase of product sales, but by a quantifiable influence in terms of positive environmental and social impact,” said Jeremy Pochman, President of 11th Hour Racing.

The Land Rover BAR team greatly assisted in building a Green Certified training facility for their team in the UK that has a long list of green elements:
  • 97% demolition materials recycled
  • 100% demolition concrete crushed and reused in foundations
  • 100% renewable electricity, maximising own production through 432 solar PV panels covering 100% available roof space
  • 25% water efficiency improvement from building regulations
  • Efficient use of natural light and ventilation through a giant central atrium.
  • Energy management and monitoring system, with 15 separate building performance monitoring points.
  • 30% energy savings through LED lighting
  • 100% VOC compliant paints & carpets
  • Rain water collection and reuse, with a 1200-litre tank harvesting rainwater
  • Artificial reef project, with 50 marine species and the reintroduction of native oysters
  • Landscaping introducing nine native plant species
  • Roof top bee habitats
The Land Rover BAR team harnesses sensory technology and virtual reality training for it’s crew of sailors and coaches. The use of technology aligns with 11th Hour Racing’s mission to cut back on fuel consumption and lengthen the longevity of boats by cutting time spent in the water. The “Virtual Chase Boat” also supplies the Land Rover BAR team with performance metrics to enhance coaching and future training maneuvers.

Smarter choices on the event sustainability side have also been ushered in by sailing organizers. 11th Hour Racing collaborated with event organizers on the 2016 LV World Cup and issued no balloons, offered water-refill stations, asked sponsors and team to minimize packaging and for the service industry to use reusable or compostable serviceware and environmentally friendly packaging, like biodegradable cups, bamboo cutlery, reusable cloth bags, etc.

Touted as the world’s first domestic microRNA analyzing device, the Kenko basically takes a drop of your blood and tests it for various diseases. A blood deposition tray is provided to the user monthly. They must smear a drop of their blood on the tray before placing it into the Kenko. The blood is carried to various different points of the tray, which are then separately analyzed by the Kenko.

The Birthstone

Made for expectant mothers. Its primary function is to alert mothers when they are too close to a source of electromagnetic-radiation. Radiation can have profound effects on growing fetuses, and the Birthstone allows mums-to-be to distance themselves from anything that may pose a threat to their child’s well-being.

RR Vision Next 100

Looking towards the next 100 years. Each and every Rolls-Royce will be a unique work of art. Shape, size and silhouette. You are the architect… a great promise of Rolls Royce. Such an inspiring work, this first ever vision vehicle from Rolls-Royce. Many people hate it because it is so different, we love it.

Something entirely new and unlike any other underwater breathing apparatus. The design allows users to take one additional breath when diving, extending their time underwater by one minute. That may not seem like a lot, but it’s plenty of time to go places and see things users might not have been able to experience before!

A lamp to help you focus. The phone acts as a switch to activate the lamp. Once docked, the lamp will turn on and the phone will automatically be put into do-not-disturb mode. Sure, the phone can be reactivated… but this subtle reminder goes a long way to remind the user of the importance of focus.

Transparent wood.

Maybe strange to hear, but wood seems to be a cheaper substitute for traditional silica-based glass. So maybe soon, it may find its way into windows and solar cells. When you remove lignin from the natural wood fibers you get a material that was "beautifully white”. Add then add prepolymerized methyl methacrylate and you can get transparent or translucent wood.

The beauty of cleaning. In Madrid, the architect Lina Toro has transformed an existing car wash into a theatrical experience. Internal and external spaces serve as a linear stage for a 25 minute cleansing performance.
